Description

LEAD TIME UP TO TWO WEEKS

Monica Backström joined Kosta Boda in 1967 and became one of the most important voices in Swedish studio glass — her work characterised by bold colour, sculptural confidence, and a refusal to treat functional glassware as less serious than purely decorative work. The Margarita series is a perfect expression of that approach.

Six shot glasses. Each one a cone of warm amber-orange glass, hand-blown with a deliberately slanted brim — not a flaw, not an irregularity, but a design decision that gives each glass a slight tilt, a sense of arrested motion, as though the glass is mid-pour in permanent form. The base is a solid disc of deep translucent red, weighted and substantial, anchoring the delicate cone above it. The contrast between the two — warm orange cone, vivid red foot — is the whole composition. It doesn't need anything else.

These are not production pieces. They are from the studio run — Ateljé — Kosta Boda's in-house studio editions, made in limited numbers by hand in the glass studio itself rather than on the production line. Each glass is signed and numbered: Kosta Boda M. Backström Ateljé 89, with the edition number. That signature and numbering is what separates a studio piece from a standard production run, and it is what makes these collectible rather than merely decorative.

A complete set of six, all signed, all present. This does not come up often.

Please note: One-of-a-kind vintage set. Once sold, it cannot be restocked.

Styling notes

  • Serve schnapps, limoncello, or a digestif after dinner — the 6cl capacity is exactly right for a small pour, and the slanted brim makes the ritual of drinking from them genuinely pleasurable
  • Arranged in a line or loose cluster on a dark tray, they function equally as a table sculpture between uses
  • The amber and red palette connects directly to the Kjell Engman Bon Bon vase — display both together for a Kosta Boda collector's moment within the broader Home Edit edit
  • A significant gift for a collector of Scandinavian glass, a design enthusiast, or anyone who takes their after-dinner drinks seriously
  • The signed and numbered status means these appreciate rather than depreciate — they are an investment as much as a purchase

Care

  • Hand wash only — warm water, mild soap, soft cloth
  • Do not machine wash or use dishwasher — signed studio glass should never go in a dishwasher
  • Dry immediately with a lint-free cloth to preserve clarity
  • Store upright, not stacked or inverted — protect the signed base from contact with hard surfaces
  • Handle with care — studio glass is made for use but is considerably more delicate than commercial barware
