Leonardo 'Papageno Peppe' Glass Sculpture | Hand-Blown Teal Vase with Bird Head Stopper | 45cm | Germany
Description
LEAD TIME UP TO TWO WEEKS
There are objects that sit in a room and there are objects that occupy it. This is the second kind.
At 45cm tall, the Papageno Peppe is first and foremost a presence. The body is a hand-blown teal glass vase — a generous ovoid form, clear and luminous, with the characteristic slight tonal variation that only comes from hand blowing rather than mould production. It holds light in the way coloured glass does: transmitting it, shifting it, making the surface around it different from what it would be otherwise.
The stopper is where the piece becomes something else entirely. A sculpted bird head in amber-orange glass, with a pointed white beak, a large eye rendered in murrine — concentric rings of white and deep pink around a dark iris — and a crown of five cobalt blue spikes rising from the top of the skull. The head sits on a natural wood collar that seals the vase body below. The combination of materials — blown glass body, sculpted glass head, wood collar — and the combination of tones — teal, amber, cobalt, pink, white — is both technically accomplished and genuinely strange in the best sense: playful and precise at once.
Leonardo is a German glassware house with a long history of producing art glass objects that occupy the space between craft and sculpture. The Papageno series — named for the bird-catcher of Mozart's Magic Flute — is among their most distinctive work. This piece is in perfect condition. It is not a common find at this size.

Styling notes
- At 45cm this needs a surface where it can be seen at close to eye level — a console, a low shelf, a sideboard — rather than placed high where the stopper detail is lost
- The teal body connects directly to the Kjell Engman Bon Bon vase and the Filippa candlestick in teal — placed in the same room, the three pieces share a colour thread that reads as curated
- The cobalt blue crown connects to the Royal Caribbean Kosta Boda coupe glasses — another thread across the collection
- Works in maximalist, eclectic, and global-artisan interiors; also works as the single unexpected object in an otherwise restrained room
- The Papageno reference — Mozart's bird-catcher from The Magic Flute — gives this a cultural depth worth mentioning when guests ask about it, and they will ask
Care
- Wipe body with a soft dry or very slightly damp cloth
- Handle the stopper separately when cleaning — the wood collar is a distinct component and should not be soaked
- Do not submerge — the wood collar joint should not be exposed to water
- Keep away from direct sustained sunlight to preserve the teal glass tone
- Handle with care and always support from the base — at 45cm this is a substantial and front-heavy object
- Display only — not suitable for use as a functional decanter or vase with water
