In the glassmaking furnaces of Murano, there is a tradition that has nothing to do with commercial production. The workers — the master glassblowers and their teams — make their own personal glasses to use during their shifts. A way of marking ownership, of distinguishing one person's glass from another's in a room full of glass. These are called Goti de Fornase: furnace glasses. Because they're made freely, without a commission brief, they tend to be where the most interesting ideas happen.

This set is part of that tradition. Six tumblers in hand-blown topaz amber, each one fused with silver leaf — real silver, incorporated into the glass itself during the blowing process, not painted or applied afterward. The silver catches and breaks light in a way that shifts with the angle of view: sometimes a warm shimmer, sometimes a cooler flash. Scattered murrine in multicolour punctuate the surface throughout. No moulds. No two identical. The amber base colour is deep and saturated — darker and richer than the previous amber set, with a jewel-like quality that comes from the silver interaction.

Because the colours and silver are fused into the glass rather than applied to it, these are genuinely dishwasher safe without risk of the decoration degrading. That distinction matters — and it's worth knowing when you're comparing against cheaper imitations where surface treatments will fade.

A note on authenticity

The Murano glass market is flooded with imitations — pieces marketed as Murano glass but made elsewhere using industrial methods. These glasses are made by Muma, a Murano-based maker working in the Goti de Fornase tradition. The silver leaf is fused into the glass, not printed on. The murrine are inserted by hand. If you are comparing on price alone, you are not comparing the same thing.

Styling notes

• The silver leaf gives these a more evening-appropriate, formal quality than the plain amber murrine set — consider them for dinner parties, celebrations, and occasions where the table is part of the event
