Ecru linen, softened to the particular warmth that only comes with age, each one carrying a border of hand-embroidered scrollwork in a tone-on-tone beige thread. The design is Italian in character — flowing, confident curves, small cutwork apertures worked into the scroll at intervals, all finished with drawn thread hems that pull the entire edge into a fine, precise border. Tone-on-tone embroidery of this kind requires more skill than coloured work: there's no contrast to carry the eye, so the quality of the stitch has to do all the work. It does.

Excellent vintage condition throughout — clean, no pulls, no fading, the cutwork intact. For eight pieces of this age to survive in this condition together is genuinely unusual.
