"Turtle's Back" Handwoven Sweetgrass & Raffia Basket — 12" | Gitarama, Rwanda
Description
Look closely at the weave and you will see where the name comes from.
The interlocking pattern of sweetgrass and raffia creates a surface that reads like a turtle's shell — geometric, rhythmic, each section defined and deliberate. It is the kind of detail that reveals itself slowly, which is exactly what good craft should do.
This basket is made by artisans in Gitarama, a town in the Southern Province of Rwanda with a deep tradition of basket weaving that stretches back generations. The sweetgrass brings fragrance. The raffia brings structure. Together they produce something that sits at the intersection of utility and art — a bowl that earns its place on your table and your wall in equal measure.
At 12 inches across it is generous without being imposing. The hanging string at the back means it moves between rooms and roles without ceremony.
